1. Leadership

A person of integrity influences others because he wants to bring something to the table that will benefit them --- not to put them on the table to benefit himself.
John C Maxwell in "Becoming A Person of Influence?""

Thank you to Herm Boatin, Science Consultant and Adjunct Professor of Biology at University of Michigan-Dearborn, for contributing this leadership quote.

To better meet the needs of the approximately 45,000 educators participating in Building a Presence (BaP), NSTA launched a new design of its BaP for Science website. BaP 3.0 is an internet portal created to provide the BaP community with timely information about professional development opportunities and the latest happenings in the science education community. The enhanced website also provides the user with state specific information about key events and conferences happening locally.

Building a Presence for Science is NSTA's largest networking initiative. This award-winning program has been developed in support of NSTA's mission in promoting excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning for all. Through BaP, teachers of science become aware of professional development opportunities, develop and enhance their leadership skills, and foster collaboration among science education professionals.

Michigan Science Education Leadership Association Accepting Nominations

Have you ever wanted to serve as an officer for a state-wide organization? Michigan Science Education Leadership Association (MSELA) is seeking interested Science leaders for their executive board. There are two positions available; the first being Member at Large. This position is for a member in good standing who would be willing to serve on the Executive Board for three years. This would entail participating in the monthly phone conferences, the two face to face meetings with the Board annually, and the three state-wide meetings we have for the general membership. The membership meetings are in the fall, pre-MSTA, and in the spring when selected topics are dealt with in terms of the science classroom.

The other position is for President-elect. This position is also for three years and entails being the President-elect for one year while helping the current President with their duties, being the President for one year, and then being Immediate Past President for an additional year. This assures the continuation of the Executive Board while allowing for the addressing of current concerns in the field of science education in Michigan. If there are questions OR if you are interested please contact Liz Niehaus at niehaus_p@msn.com or David Bydlowski at bydlowd@resa.net

Plant Growth in Space

Follow the growth of cinnamon basil seeds on the International Space Station with a gallery of images documenting the experiment from its very beginning. The gallery features images of astronaut Clayton Anderson's 20-day in-orbit experiment, including close-up views of the plants' growth. Students participating in the NASA Engineering Design Challenge: Lunar Plant Growth Chamber can compare the growth of the plants on the space station with the growth of plants in their own growth chambers. For full details, please visit:
http://www.nasa.gov/audience/foreducators/plant-growth-gallery-index.html

Watch as the crew of space shuttle mission STS-118 explains plant growth chambers they are delivering to the International Space Station. To help NASA, the astronauts invite students to participate in the plant growth chamber experiment. In the U.S. lab of the International Space Station, Expedition 15 Flight Engineer Clayton Anderson prepares the plant growth chambers for a 20-day plant growth experiment. Viewers observe how the tiny plants grew before the experiments were returned to Earth on shuttle mission STS-120. For full details, please visit:

Saturday Morning Physics

Physics is a fundamental science and provides the foundations for solving both cosmic mysteries and practical problems. In 1995, the University of Michigan Department of Physics began sharing some of the latest ideas in the field with the public in the Saturday Morning Physics lecture series. Designed for general audiences, the lectures are an opportunity to hear physicists discuss their work in easy-to-understand, non-technical terms. The multimedia presentations include hands-on demonstrations of the principles discussed, along with slides, video, and computer simulations. For more information, please visit:

High School Seniors Sought for National Youth Science Camp Scholarships

Michigan students are being encouraged to apply for two full scholarships to exchange ideas with scientists and other professionals from the academic and corporate worlds at the National Youth Science Camp. The four-week experience includes lectures and hands-on research projects presented by scientists from across the nation; three overnight expeditions into a national forest; and a visit to Washington D.C. Two high school seniors from every state can attend. The selected delegates must demonstrate academic achievement in science and also show potential for thoughtful scientific leadership.

Last year's delegates from Michigan were Kevin Patrick Schalte of Rochester Adams High School, and Mitchell Alexander Treadwell of Traverse City West Senior High School. The National Youth Science Camp (NYSC) experience is offered at no cost to its participants, so that selected delegates may attend regardless of their financial status. Through contributions from the National Youth Science Foundation, delegates get a "once in a lifetime" experience. Educational and recreational programming, as well as meals, lodging, and round-trip air passage on scheduled airlines are provided free of charge. Delegates from around the country will arrive in Charleston, West Virginia, on Sunday, June 29 and will depart on Saturday, July 26, 2008. The camp is held at Bartow, in the eastern mountains of West Virginia, near the Monongahela National Forest.

For more information and to receive an application packet, go on line to:
http://www.nysc.org

Kevin Richard from the Michigan Department of Education will serve as the state's selection coordinator for the 2008 NYSC. If additional information is needed, contact Kevin Richard at (517) 373-4223 or at RichardK1@michigan.gov. Applications must arrive at the Michigan Department of Education by February 20, 2008.
